What is panthenol, and is it good for us?

Payot-Elixir-d’Eau-–-Hydrating-Thirst-Quenching-Essence-abloomnova.net_-1600x1163 What is panthenol, and is it good for us?

We have no idea why, but the ingredient panthenol doesn’t sound like it’s that good for us. Maybe it’s its clinical-sounding name, or maybe it reminds us of Pantene Pro-V (a hair range that we’re not big fans of) – either way, it’s in some of our favourite products, so we decided to check out the facts before making rash decisions.

Turns out we were wrong. Very wrong. Panthenol is an ingredient you DO want in your hair and skincare products.

Here’s what LiveStrong says about it all.

Panthenol is a common ingredient used in skin care products, including cosmetics, hair sprays, shampoos and conditioners. This natural ingredient can be found in plants and is a form of vitamin B5, also referred to as pantothenic acid. Panthenol has been deemed safe by the FDA, useful for improving appearances and softening the skin. Because of panthenol’s humectant-like properties, it is easily absorbed into layers beneath the skin’s surface.

Panthenol can treat sunburns.

Panthenol is used in ointments and personal care products, and is able to treat skin irritations such as mild burns, sunburns, insect bites and cuts when mixed with allantoin. Other functions include improving skin hydration, reducing itching and inflammation, and accelerating healing in epidermal wounds. In some products, panthenol can be found in a spray form for easy application on cuts scrapes and burns. For personal care products, panthenol offers antimicrobial properties, which are important for controlling the growth and transmission of bacteria. Panthenol can also be found in acne treatments because of its ability to counteract bacteria.

Thanks goodness for that – Dr. Spiller Biomimetic Skin Care Fresh & Fruit Moisturizing Mask is one of our favourite indulgences when we have an hour to soak and pamper.

This is an exotic and refreshing gel mask with extracts of Papaya, Mango and Pineapple that contain enzymes to gently exfoliate, cool and refresh the skin, revealing a glowing complexion.
