Think you know how to clean your face? Well, it might be that you’re doing it the wrong way. Using water too hot, using towels that are too rough, using a cleanser that is too harsh. Livestrong helped us with this guide on how the most practiced skincare routine should be carried out.

Freshly washed and clean skin glows, and is the foundation for good skin health and for cosmetic application. Rather than using harsh, oil-stripping soaps, which rob the skin of its natural moisture, you should find an oil-free cleanser that won’t irritate your skin. To wash your skin properly, you’ll need a step-by-step treatment method to get flawless and smooth skin.

Step 1

Remove hair off your face with a headband or a cotton turban. If you have makeup on your face, remove it with an emollient wipe or oil-based cream.

Step 2

Squeeze a small amount of a cleanser, formulated for your skin type, like a Guinot cleanser, on your hand and rub your wet hands together so you create a foam. Using your fingertips, gently massage the cleansing foam into your skin beginning at your forehead and working down to your chin. Limit your face washing time to one minute or less — any longer may strip your skin of natural oils.

Step 3

Rinse your face gently with warm water. Splash your face with water three or four times to make sure that you get every bit of cleanser off your skin.

Step 4

Using your soft towel, blot — do not rub — your face dry. Your skin is now ready for exfoliation and toning.

Warnings

If you already have acne, find a facial cleanser that has salicylic acid in it. Don’t use cleansers with scrubbing agents or beads, according to acne.org.

Tips

Wash your face one to two times per day. If you use cosmetics, use an oil-free moisturizer before you begin applying your cosmetics.

Use your fingers instead of a washcloth or mesh scrubber. You’ll only strip the natural oils from your skin and that may lead to excess production of oil and an acne breakout.

Pay special attention to the forehead, chin and sides of your nose as these areas generate excess skin oil.
