How self tanner has come a long way since the ’80s

We’re creeping into winter, and the sun has pretty much disappeared from the sky for the next five months.

While some of us may rely on winter sun holidays to get us through the long stretch of darkness, others will use sun beds to get their hit of UVA. But we’re not too keen on subjecting ourselves to harmful rays (although a trip to the Canary Islands, we will consider).

We’re more likely to douse ourselves in self tanner than lay out in the garden in 30c weather. Which is why we’re always on the hunt for a good tanning product. Something affordable, easy to use, doesn’t streak, doesn’t smell like digestive biscuits, doesn’t rub off on your bedsheets, doesn’t stain your underwear, doesn’t settle in the cracks of your hands giving you bright orange knuckles and doesn’t give you the Donald Trump look.

We’re not asking for much are we?

The good thing is, tanners have come a long, long way since the first time we started applying them in the late 80s, early 90s. Back then a brown gunk would be squeezed out of a tube and you were instructed to rub it in to your skin for dear life. The consistency of said product would require rigorous massaging for approximately two and a half hours, before there was any kind of absorption.

The next morning we’d wake looking like a bourbon biscuit.

Nowadays, things are a little more sophisticated, much to our – and our knuckles’ – relief.
