If you know anything about vitamins and minerals, you’ll know that you should take vitamin D with calcium. But the reasons for this may not seem clear. This post should explain why it is so important that the two should be taken forever, and the reasons why.
Take any type of calcium – calcium carbonate, calcium citrate, calcium with magnesium, calcium with folic acid – you’ll always be advised to double up or combine your pills with vitamin D supplements.
Those who live in sunnier climes, will simply put on a pair of shorts and soak up some rays. However if you’re in the often dark and rainy UK, you’ll no doubt be suffering from vitamin D deficiency and therefore will benefit from a vitamin D supplement.
However, regardless of deficiency – vitamin D is vital to the safe passage of calcium in the body. Why?
First of all, if there were friendships in the body, calcium and vitamin D would be husband and wife. They travel together a lot in the body, and with a lot of things, one won’t work without the other.
Secondly, calcium supplements can be combined with vitamin D because the body finds calcium difficult to absorb without the help of vitamin D.
Thirdly, the partnership between calcium and vitamin D helps build strong bones. This reduces the risk of osteoporosis, rickets and other bone weakening conditions.
When the body lacks vitamin D, the body cannot form enough of calcitrol, the hormone which also known as ‘active vitamin D’. Calcitrol regulates levels of calcium in the body and bone growth. The hormone also facilitates the absorption of calcium from the intestines. It also decreases the rate at which calcium is excreted in urine, thus helping raise calcium levels in the body.
When the body is deficient in calcium, it needs to dig in to the stores. The skeleton is the obvious place. So calcium is taken from the bones in order to make more cells. However, this strips the bones of much needed calcium and weakens them.
Vitamin D and calcium also work to develop muscles, with vitamin D helping to build muscle strength and balance which in turn avoids bones fracturing and breaking.
A combined supplement like calcium and vitamin D is especially recommended for older people to ward off bone weakening issues.
