Are you worried about calcium toxicity? Despite it being a wonderful component to building bones and muscles – as well as a variety of other important jobs – calcium can be very dangerous in large doses. In fact, it can be fairly toxic, leading to a condition which is called hypercalcaemia.

Hypercalcaemia is often triggered by a problem with the parathyroid gland, called hyperparathyroidism. Some cancer patients also suffer from it. It is when an excess of calcium is leached from the stores within the bone and leaked into the blood supply.

What often happens can be fairly obvious to someone who knows what they are looking for. But to the average person, it can be fairly frightening. With too much calcium in the blood supply, the toxicity can lead to symptoms such as depression, fatigue, slurred speech, confusion, nausea, thirsts, weakness and constipation. It can also make that person’s skin feel itchy and uncomfortable.

This can often come over someone quite quickly and be alarming to close friends and family. However, a blood test can be taken which will reveal the reason quite quickly. And the treatment can be done just as quickly, by setting up an IV drip with bisphosphonates in to the blood stream.

According to a paper on calcium, Dr L Wilson describes a phenomenon called biounavailable calcium, which can occur during times where the body is suffering from calcium toxicity.

“In many instances of calcium toxicity, calcium builds up in the body in a biounavailable form.  This means it is present, but cannot be used properly. This condition causes symptoms of both deficiency and excess at the same time because there can be a deficiency of available calcium, and an excess of biounavailable calcium at the same time… Calcium becomes essentially a toxic mineral, causing narrowing of the arteries and calcium deposits in the joints, arteries, kidneys, brain and elsewhere.”
