Ever wondered what the big hoo-ha was over going natural when it came to cosmetics? Could a natural facial cleanser do the job of a more widely recognised brand with lots of chemicals in? Surely if a product does the job, you should carry on using it? The products must be adhere to strict conditions and any scare stories must be mongered by rivals, surely?

Well, if a product does do its job then great – but surely that’s what it’s there to do? And while products must adere to strict testing, it might not necessarily be the ‘right’ testing.

In terms of long term health, there is a huge problem in many cosmetics and skincare products on the market. Take something like parabens for instance. Parabens are well known to be linked to risks of developing cancer (to the extent where certain countries like Denmark have banned them) and therefore should be completely ruled out as an ingredient. However, parabens are completely legal and in most beauty products and a lot of food products.

Going natural means avoiding a lot of the bad stuff, like parabens, so you can feel 100 per cent safe in using them. Natural also means using products that are cruelty-free which will be a huge priority for many people, not just vegans.

Using something like a natural facial cleanser – like our current fave – Atlantis Skincare Glowing Skin – means that what is going on your face is completely free of nasties, animal testing and harsh chemicals. Look at the ingredients for example:

Aloe barbadensis leaf juice, Rosa damascena flower water, Hamamelis virginiana leaf water, Aqua, Simmondsia chinensis seed oil, Glycerin, Juglans regia seed oil, Macadamia ternifolia seed oil, Rosa canina fruit oil, Alcohol, Prunus amygdalus dulcis seed oil, Benzyl alcohol, Tocopherol, Xanthan gum, Melissa officinalis leaf oil, Sucrose laurate, Helianthus annuus seed oil, Citrus aurantium dulcis fruit water, Potassium sorbate, Salicylic acid, Citric acid, Styrax benzoin resin extract, Jasminum officinale flower extract, Sodium benzoate, Sorbic acid, Citrus aurantium flower oil, Rosa damascena flower oil, Hippophae rhamnoides fruit extract, Citronellol, Geraniol, Citral, d-Limonene, Linalol, Farnesol.

It’s all completely natural – and so, so good for your skin. And it not only does its job, but surpasses it. Every scrap of dirt is lifted away and you are left with soft, nourished skin.

Word of warning: Stay alert when it comes to “natural”. Many products describe themselves as such, and may just contain one plant extract in a list of harsh chemicals. So always read the contents before buying!
