Why all natural skin care is best

Having had decades of wearing anything that is smells nice/has nice packaging/has been forced on me by pushy sales assistants it felt slightly too “out there” to commit to all natural skin care. With ideas of mashed banana face masks and washing my hair in beer, the sheer range and extensiveness of the all-natural products on the markets is impressive.

This choice of skincare has moved along way since henna hair dye and cucumbers on eyes. All natural skin care has moved to the 21st century, and I am more likely to unknowingly pick up a natural product as I am a commercial, chemically product. In fact, established brands have picked up on this and are now packaging their products to look more earthy, natural and handmade – so there is a slight blurring of what is actually the real McCoy. Of course one look at the ingredients is all you need to do to check.

So why is all natural skin care best? Here are four reasons why you should reduce the amount of non-natural products asap.

  1. Phthalates and parabens

Many traditional skin care products can contain these – and can disrupt the endocrine system. Phthalates and parabens can cause reproductive issues, and they have been linked to increasing the risk of cancer. Going all natural means there is no danger from poisons – you get plant-based extracts as nature intended.

  1. Toxicity overload

Many of us can use up to 10 skin care products each day; that could be 10 products full of toxic chemicals! The more chemicals add up the higher the toxic concentration. Going organic, or at least all natural, will allow your body a rest from a lot of these unnecessary toxins and treat your skin to soothing, good, nourishing ingredients.

  1. Do you know the brand’s morals?

According to Treehugger: A skincare company is more than the sum of its products. What about its philosophy and values? Visiting a website is always enlightening; TreeHugger has also written about many beauty and personal care companies. Does the company test on animals, for example? Has it signed the Compact for Safe Cosmetic,s a pledge to remove harmful chemicals from ingredients lists and replace them with safer alternatives? How committed is it to reducing its impact on the environment?

  1. No petro-chemical junk

Used to make emollients for face cream or found in the form of coal tar for scalp-treatment shampoos, petroleum byproducts can be contaminated by cancer-containing impurities. A nonrenewable and environmentally unfriendly resource, petroleum barely belong in your car, let alone on your skin. Identify it on labels as petrolatum, mineral oil, and paraffin.
