Winter can wreak havoc on our hands. While we cover our faces with ampoules, serums, creams and moisturisers, our poor mitts bear the brunt of harsh weather, constant washing and general wear and tear.
Thanks to NetDoctor, here are some tips on looking after your paws this season.
Choose your hand cream wisely
A good hand cream can protect your delicate skin when it’s cold outside.
But choose one that’s oil-based rather than water-based. Look for ingredients such as liquid paraffin, white soft paraffin, lanolin or mineral oil, which trap water in the skin by providing a layer of oil on the surface of the skin and prevent water evaporating.
Good hand creams often also contain glycerine. This ingredient works by helping to retain water in outer layer of the skin, helping to keep hands hydrated and soft.
Moisturise more often
Moisturising hands regularly is the key to relieving dry skin. Try to establish a moisturising routine that works for you – keep a tube of hand cream on your desk at work, by the sink or in your handbag will help you remember to apply it often during the day.
Aim to use your hand cream at least four times a day. For seriously dry hands you could try a deep-treatment overnight. Apply a thick oily hand cream, put on some cotton gloves and sleep with them on.
Wash with care
If you suffer from dry hands try using a gentle hand wash that contains moisturising ingredients. And when washing hands use lukewarm water to avoid stripping away natural oils from the skin and moisture them straight after. Hand gels containing alcohols may also have a drying effect on the hands — try avoiding ones containing simple alcohol often referred to as alcohol Denat or ethyl alcohol on the label.
