An oily scalp creates greasy hair, and greasy hair can look unhygienic, unpleasant and can cause skin complaints. So what’s the best way of dealing with it?

We look at some tips, courtesy of RewardMe.

  1. Shower Once a Day

When you shower and wash hair more than once a day it strips oils from your hair. Over-washing tricks glands into producing even more oil. To keep hair fresh and bouncy looking, shower in the morning.

Apply shampoo, lather and let suds sit for a few minutes to penetrate oil. Rinse thoroughly. Hairdressers recommend that you wash it every 2-3 days to keep oil production in check.

  1. Remove Buildup Monthly

Use a clarifying shampoo once a month to remove any extra buildup of oil and hair-care products. Many clarifying shampoos contain sodium lauryl sulfates that strip oil from both the scalp and the hair shaft.

As an alternative, some people prefer to add baking soda to their shampoo every two-to-four weeks. Be careful if using dandruff shampoos as they can be too drying, even for very oily scalps and hair.

  1. Shrink Pores

For extremely oily hair, try astringents and natural acids that help slow the production of sebum.

Some natural remedies recommended by hair-care experts to battle oil include rinsing hair with beer, lemon juice or vinegar to de-slick hair. Mouthwash and witch hazel are astringents that both tighten skin and shrink pores.

In a small container, mix equal parts witch hazel and mouthwash.

Dip a cotton swab into the mixture and dab onto your scalp.

Astringents should be applied after you’ve finished shampooing and rinsing.

  1. Condition Hair with Caution

Conditioners and detangling products can make your hair look greasy. When applying conditioning products start at the ends where hair is the driest. Some women use no conditioner at all or only once a week.

If your hair tangles easily, apply a small amount of olive oil or conditioner before drying. As you brush and blow-dry hair the conditioner will be distributed evenly over your whole head. Another way to avoid the need for conditioners and detangling products is to use a gentle shampoo.

  1. Blow-Dry with Cool Air

After washing your hair, thoroughly and gently towel it dry.

Heat and hot air also encourage glands to produce more sebum, so style as best you can with bursts of cool air.

Brush hair only as needed. Straightening hair through heat application can also stimulate oil production.

Handling your hair excessively while straightening can also contribute to increased oil distribution.

  1. Try Dry Shampoo

Dry shampoo can be a lifesaver for busy women with oily hair.

Dry shampoo comes in spray or powder form. These products not only soak up oil like a sponge but leave your hair smelling fresh and clean without water.

Test several products and choose one that won’t leave a residue or weigh hair down. You don’t want to look like you’re wearing a powdered wig! A quality dry shampoo will wash out easily when you’re ready for wet shampoo.

  1. Change Your Hairstyle

If you don’t like dry shampoo, stylists suggest changing your hairstyle.

Ponytails and chignons are sophisticated and designed to look slick. So grab some hair elastics and experiment. As a last resort, consider a perm! Permed and naturally curly hair doesn’t get oily as fast since it doesn’t lie as close to the scalp. This might be a big reason to embrace the curly look!
